What is Vedic Astrology? How the Cosmos & Planets Influence Us

Around 2,000 years ago, both Western and Vedic astrology used the same method: tracking the movement of the planets along the ecliptic, the apparent path the Sun takes through the sky, to create horoscopes and make predictions.
However, over time, a slow wobble in the Earth’s rotation, called ‘precession’, has caused a shift in this path. This wobble, caused by gravitational forces from the Sun and Moon, gradually tilts the Earth’s axis and, in turn, the ecliptic. It takes roughly 26,000 years to complete one full cycle, and during that time, the position of the stars and constellations appears to shift by about 1 degree every 72 years.
Because of this ongoing shift, the current position of the Sun and planets in the sky no longer aligns with where they were 2,000 years ago. In other words, the zodiac signs used back then no longer correspond to the same positions today.
Vedic Sciences astrology is in line with astronomy, and adjusts for natures shifts by using what’s called the ‘sidereal zodiac’, which reflects the actual, current positions of celestial bodies in the sky. Western astrology, on the other hand, continues to use the ‘tropical zodiac’, which is fixed to the seasons and the Earth’s position relative to the Sun, rather than to the stars. As a result, Western astrology is more symbolic concentrating itself with the sun mostly and peoples current personality, while Vedic astrology is closely aligned with astronomy and is a measurable science. It’s a deeply powerful self development science that goes far beyond the superficialities of 12 fixed position zodiac signs.
The daily horoscope you often find free in the papers is not based on Vedic sciences. They are two completely different things all together.
As outlined in the Vedas, all beings and phenomena exist within the domain of ‘kāla’, or time. Time governs the entire arc of our existence, pulling individuals through successive stages of life, death, and rebirth. The nature of each life is shaped by ‘karma’, the accumulated results of past actions, which unfold within the framework of cosmic time.
Modern science presents a parallel perspective through the theory of ‘space-time’, the four-dimensional fabric formed by the union of space and time, as described in Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Massive celestial bodies, such as planets and stars, create gravitational fields that warp this fabric, subtly influencing everything within their range, including the Earth and its inhabitants.
On a more subtle level, quantum mechanics has shown that all matter exists as both particles and waves, and that everything in the universe is fundamentally a field of energy and vibration. At this scale, seemingly distant objects can influence one another through complex fields of resonance and entanglement, even across vast distances. This opens the door to understanding how planetary bodies might influence life on Earth, not through classical mechanics alone, but via energetic and vibrational interactions that modern physics is still learning to fully explain.
Vedic scholar David Frawley, in ‘The Astrology of the Seers’, offers a metaphysical framework aligned with these ideas. He writes:
What we call the planets are no more than points of light in a vast energy network, connected intricately by subtle lines of force, linking the entire solar system into a single organism. Though the planets appear like small points of light in the distance, their energy fields are present on Earth, and they are responsible for many of the formations of the Earth life and of our own bodies and minds.”
From this perspective, the planets are not just distant spheres of rock or gas, but part of a unified field of influence, a living system in which everything is interconnected through light, vibration, and subtle energy. Just as quantum particles can exhibit non-local behaviour, it's conceivable that planetary energies might exert their effects beyond the limitations of classical space and time.
In this view, life is not simply a biological accident, but an expression of cosmic order. Time is the stage on which life unfolds, and the planets act like regulators or "referees" of this cosmic play, maintaining rhythm, balance, and coherence within a vast energetic system.
The ancient discipline of astrology, when practiced in its true, scientific form, bears little resemblance to the oversimplified horoscopes found in today’s magazines and websites. Modern ‘sun sign astrology,’ which attempts to divide the world’s population into 12 personality types, strips away the complexity, depth, and purpose of the original systems. By contrast, classical Vedic, Egyptian, Arabic, Greek & Persian astrology was founded on rigorous scientific and mathematical principles. These traditions integrated astronomy, physics, and geometry, mapping the movements of celestial bodies and correlating them with cycles of life on Earth.
Historically, astrologers were also astronomers, mathematicians, healers, and philosophers. They studied the cosmos, skies & universal principles not as fortune-tellers, but as scientists of consciousness. Their aim was not mere prediction, but guidance to help individuals understand themselves, their challenges & potential in living in peace. Self-actualisation.
In many traditions, astrology was seen as an applied science of self-awareness, a tool to elevate both the individual and society by cultivating emotional intelligence, balance & alignment with natural rhythms.
To a genuine scientific astrologer, saying “I am a Leo” or “I am a Taurus” is meaningless. Real astrology is not about static labels or clichés; it is about decoding subtle energetic patterns that influence our tendencies, habits & desires. The birth chart, calculated with mathematical precision using time, date, and place of birth, is less about predicting future events and more about understanding the mechanics of one’s inner world. Like physics describes the behaviour of particles, astrology can describe the behaviour of consciousness in human form, rooted deeply in quantum mechanic principle.
Unfortunately, over centuries, misuse, oversimplification and monetising of this discipline has led to skepticism and dismissal. The modern reduction of astrology to trivial predictions about wealth, romance, or lucky numbers has overshadowed its true value as a science of awareness. When understood properly, Vedic astrology in particular offers profound insights into personality, cycles of growth, and the interconnectedness of human life with cosmic order.
Today, neuroscience and quantum physics are beginning to validate what ancient astrologers intuited: that we are not isolated beings, but deeply connected to rhythms of time, energy & environment. In time and space but not as current logic may comprehend easily.
Research into circadian biology, epigenetics, and quantum entanglement shows how subtle external forces can influence physiology, emotion & cognition, enabling some to recall other lives, near death and out of body experiences. In this light, astrology can be seen not as “magical thinking,” but as an ancient framework describing patterns of resonance between the cosmos and human life.
At its heart, vedic astrology is not about predicting outcomes, but about cultivating awareness. It helps us recognise both our shadows and our gifts, enabling personal growth, healthier relationships & a deeper sense of purpose.
Misused, it becomes superstition.
Used wisely, it is a scientific, personal growth and awareness tool. A tool that one that can awaken us to the vast, often dormant potential within.
