Author of Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear-Driven Brain, Sebern Fisher, MA, answers nine foundational questions about an integrated approach to Neurofeedback

How neurofeedback applied neuroscience helped 3 ladies ‘written’ off by conventional medical paradigms. Childhood trauma or PTSD sees victims turn to hospitals, crime, school struggles and family breakdown as time goes on. Medication and talk therapy are not working. Neurofeedback addresses root causes working with addressing the fear driven brain. From the amygdala to affect regulation, Sebern Fisher is a pioneer addressing proven solutions

CASE STUDIES

Three patients, considered treatment resistant, all of whom have suffered from developmental trauma

One was a woman who had been plagued with intractable pileptic seizures and confined to her apartment in a housing project, waiting for her next seizure to occur, hoping that this would not happen at a time when she was to pick up her baby from daycare. Reporting that after neurofeedback, it had cured her seizures after numerous medications had failed to do so, and had helped her to become sufficiently focused to attend college and get a degree in journalism.

Rennie's Case: Rennie, who faced severe sexual trauma and attachment ruptures, underwent a 20-month neurofeedback training process. The author details her initial assessment and training sessions, making clear the importance of responding to her unique brain patterns. Over the course of training, there was notable progress in Rennie's mood regulation, relationships, and parenting capabilities, showcasing the transformative potential of neurofeedback.

The next young woman had been chronically isolated and out of touch with her environment. After neurofeedback tratning, she came across as vivacious and inquisitive.

Cybele's Case: Cybele’s background is marked by dissociative identity disorder (DID) stemming from childhood trauma. The author chronicles her progress through a combination of neurofeedback and therapy, noting her emerging coherence and connection with emotional experiences. Cybele's journey reflects a gradual integration of her dissociative states, illustrating neurofeedback's role in enhancing self-awareness and emotional regulation.

The third patient was most familiar: A young woman who had grown up shuttled between residential treatment programs, hospitals, and foster care placements and who, a few years prior to our meeting, had matured out of Child Protection Services, suffering from dissociative identity disorder and chronic self injurious behaviour, without any identifiable skills. Young people like her tend to be too confused, frightened, and dysegulated to benefit from most therapy programs, and, lacking more effective interventions, are often managed on mood stabilising medications, which make them less impulsive but also less able to learn and engage deeply if school, work, or relationship...

a bright woman, she described what it was like to have been plagued by chronic noises in her head and an inability to focus on schoolwork, therapy, or consistent relationships because of a disastrous combination of a chronic state of terror and extreme mental confusion. During two lengthy interviews she gave the most lucid description anybody has ever given of what it was like to have been a chronically dissociated, self-destructive, terrified adolescent.

Of the many memorable things she told me, one in particular stands out:

Yes, I slowly became an attached person. When you are not afraid and confused you can know people differently." When I asked her to summarize what neurofeedback had done for her she said, It calmed me down. It stopped the dissociation. I can now use my feel-ings; I'm not running away from them; I'm not held hostage by them. I can't tum them off and on, but I can put them away. I may be sad about the abuse I went through, but I can put it away. I can call a friend and not talk about it if I don't want to talk about it, or I can do homework, or clean my apartment. I'm not anxious all the time, and when I am anxious I can reflect on it. If the anxiety is coming from the past I can find it there, or I can look at how it relates to my life now. And it's not just negative emotions, like anger and anxiety, 1 can reflect on love and intimacy or sexual attraction. Neurofeedback freed me up to live my life the way I want to because I'm not always in the thrall of how I was hurt and what it did to me. I'm not in fight or flight physically all the time.

She appeared completely cured, and three years after our interview she graduated near the top of her class in nursing school.

Eleanor's Case: Eleanor, diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and an eating disorder, exemplifies the complex interplay of various psychosocial factors. As her neurofeedback sessions progressed, Eleanor began to experience a more stable sense of self. The author emphasizes neurofeedback's crucial role in helping her regulate affect and build genuine relationships, leading to her eventual transformation into a more integrated individual.

Excerpts from Bassel Van Der Kolk MD Trauma Specialist, on the book of Sebern F. Fisher: Neurofeedback Treatment for Developmental Trauma: Calming the fear-driven brain.

Neurofeedback: non invasive non pharma not a talk therapy. Allows the fear circuitry of fear driven brains to regulate leaving space for non reactive behaviours, clear decision making & more.

Neurofeedback's Role: Each case reinforces the idea that neurofeedback is not merely about learning protocols, but rather about understanding and engaging with the individual brain's responses. Intergenerational Trauma: The cases highlight how trauma can be transmitted across generations and how addressing it can lead to healing not only for the individual but also for their families.

Relational Dynamics: The narrative strongly underlines the significance of relationships, both therapeutic and familial, in the healing process. The development of empathy and social connection is portrayed as vital for recovery.

The knock on effect of relationship breakdown, cost to public health and social services is huge. There is another way.
